Click on any of the pointers on the map above to get the specific address for that particular Des Moines florist. There are a number of great florists spread out around the metro Des Moines area. Among the most popular are certainly Boesen’s, and the florists within both Dahl’s and HyVee grocery store. While these are certainly some of the larger and more popular ones, one should not discount some of the smaller locally owned shops.

Wherever you live in the Metro DM area, this map should guide you to a florist near you.

Interested in growing flowers or vegetables this spring, but don’t have a place to garden? You should look into joining a community garden. Community gardens are a great place for city residents to grow flowers and vegetables in a fun relaxed atmosphere. Typically you can reserve or rent a specific plot of ground within a designated gardening area. In addition to beautifying the city there are many benefits to getting involved in a community garden. If you are a beginner, you can get the help and advice of fellow veterans. This can come in very handy and can be a huge time saver. By relying on the collective intelligence your fellow gardeners you don’t have learn by trial and error as much. Your fellow gardeners can help you with everything from spacing plants to preparing the soil and everything in between.

Community gardens also provide a great place to build friendships as you work alongside your neighbors. It is so much easier and natural to get to know people when you participate in a project with them. Gardening provides just this kind of relationship building opportunity and often can lead to a stronger sense of ownership and pride in your community. Another major benefit to gardening this way is that you can save considerable time and money. By buying in bulk and splitting up the work costs can spread across the entire group instead of being shouldering by any one individual.

Finally the last benefit to working with others on your garden is that it provides a sense of accountability. My biggest struggle in gardening is sticking with the weeding and watering. When you know you are part of a group that wants to see the whole garden look nice and cared for the bar gets raised to consistently take care of your flowers and veggies. The closest comparison I can think of is working out with a partner. You are going to be a whole lot more motivated to get out of bed and make it to the gym if you know someone is there waiting for you. With spring in the air, this is the time to check out this option. Fortunately, Des Moines has a couple fantastic community gardening programs. You might want to hurry to sign up though, as you don’t want to be planting late and spots fill up quickly. Watch the Des Moines Register every spring for specific locations and contact persons.

There was an Interesting article in the Des Moines Register the other day on a metro Des Moines Flowers shop. The article gives a review of Classic Floral Design, in Waukee. Great stuff on a store that provides not just flowers, but also mylar balloons for all occasions, plants and gifts.

Classic is a perfect fit for the name of Classic Floral Design as it reminds me of your traditional mom and pop small business. It is owned and operated by Lyn Schafer, a veteran florist, with over forty years in the business. In addition to Lyn, Berniece Johnson, has been providing quality customer service and floral expertise at Classic Floral Design for fifteen years. One neat feature of this Des Moines Flowers shop is that Lyn also makes and sells her own soaps and lotions. The soap runs around for $4.95 a bar or $12 for three bars. The lotion is $7.50 for an 8-ounce bottle.

The article has a great quote by Lyn, “Flowers are not a necessity like food and fuel, and as a business owner, I have to keep that in mind. Service is a priority and I make sure my flowers are of good quality and long-lasting.”

Interested in having Des Moines Flowers Guide review your store or products? Comment on this post with a way to get in touch with you.

I was happy to hear this great Flowers story. This story came to the attention of Des Moines Flowers Guide from Jodi, an art teacher at Des Moines Christian School.

“I wanted to do a water color project with my Art I kids. They have already done landscapes, they are too used to having a photograph or picture to draw or paint from, so I wanted them to use something from real life… a still life. I was looking at lessons online that other teachers have done and I came across this great lesson on Georgia O’Keeffe who was an American artist! Student drew flowers in the O’Keeffe style, very close up and almost abstracted with simple shapes and delicate lines, and then painted them with beautful brilliant colors. I have a few artificial flowers, but I thought if I could get some real ones from a florist that would be way better. I don’t have much left in my budget so I really didn’t want to have to pay for them, but it would be worth calling and seeing if there was anything they can do.

I first turned to Boesen Florists. It is a large family owned florist here in Des Moines. I talked to a wonderfully friendly gentleman, explained the project I wanted to with my art students and he was have to give me some flowers. My largest class was fifteen so I told him that a dozen should be enough. He had them ready the next day and even asked if there was any particular kind that I wanted. I thought any variety would be nice. So a woman at the store got a rose, a posy, an iris, a carnation, one or two sunflowers, something like a small lily, flowers with blooms along the whole stem… I don’t know flower names too well. I’d say there was a dozen stems, even more flowers.

I am very excited to see how their watercolor projects turn out, and I am thankful to Boesen for donating flowers so that my kids can “see” something beautiful in a new way.”

Thanks Jodi for the great story, and thanks to Boesen for providing the great flowers to Des Moines Christian School.
